What behaviors can cause lithium batteries to reduce their lifespan

24 Aug, 2022

These years, Lithium-ion battery is getting to replace lead-acid battery in the new energy market because of their long lifespan and stable performance. In technically, the A-grade lithium-ion battery has more than 6000 times cycle life. So Lithium batteries are widely applied in device that requires a long lifespan. For example, the Solar Energy Storage System, golf carts, RV, Yachts and power tools. However, there are a few behaviors that will cause a reduction of lifespan in the lithium batteries.

1. Low Discharged
The battery is regularly discharged to less than 20%, which can reduce its capacity over time. when the battery is discharged below 20% capacity and then recharged. This can damage the battery and reduce its lifespan. If you need to discharge the battery below 20% capacity, it is better to do it slowly over some time to avoid deep cycling. Therefore it’s important to keep the battery topped up as much as possible.

2. Idle for a long time
The battery is idle for a long time.  This can cause a reduction in the lifespan of lithium batteries. Especially when the battery is stored in a cool place, this can cause the battery cells to degrade. So it’s very important to get the correct storage way for the lifepo4 batteries

3. Exposed to high-temperature area
if the battery is frequently exposed to high temperatures. Batteries tend to produce more heat when they are new, so it is important to keep them in a cool, dry place. If they get too hot, the battery chemicals can break down and the battery will no longer work. So, if you're using a lithium battery-powered device in a hot environment, it's important to keep it as cool as possible. High temperatures accelerate the degradation of the electrolyte, which can lead to capacity loss and reduced battery life.

4. Overcharging
Lithium batteries can also be damaged by overcharging. When a battery is overcharged, the lithium chemicals inside can break down and the battery will no longer work. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging the battery to avoid overcharging.

5. Physical damage
Batteries can be damaged if they are dropped, hit, or crushed. This can cause the battery chemicals to leak out and the battery will no longer work.

6. Frequent charging
When lithium batteries are charged frequently, the electrolyte inside the battery degrades, which can lead to capacity loss.

Avoiding following these 6 influences causing a reduction of the lifespan could help to extend the lifespan of lithium batteries. it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the battery in a cool, dry place, avoid overcharging, and don’t deep cycle the battery. Be careful not to drop, hit, or crush the battery, and avoid physical abuse. Lithium batteries are amazing for their small size and high energy density. However, certain behaviors can cause them to degrade and reduce their lifespan.
